At this time of year, we have many tourists coming here, the majority are coming by car/caravan or motor home from within Scandinavia. But we have also tourists coming from the rest of Europe, and by boat, we have had people all the way from New Zealand and Australia, I believe.
It is quite fascinating with the mix of people and all different languages being used. The other day I met two German women, who had got a flat tire and needed help. They talked English but with a very strong German accent which made it very difficult for me to understand what they were saying. (We don't always notice our own accent but we do notice other people's! I am sure you would all have a good laugh at me if you heard me talk English.
)
Last summer there was a luxery cruise-ship with mainly American tourists visiting town. Activities, shopping and guided trips were arranged for these people and the inhabitants were expected to stand on the quey (behind a high fence), waving with flags or whatever to greet them (I was not there but I read about it in the paper afterwards, it was all very silly in my opinion!). Very few of the people on board bothered to go ashore though and the expected invasion of eager buyers did not happen...
I believe we have another ship coming this summer or next. I don't like that kind of publicity stunts. All tourists are most welcome but please don't ask me to butter for "dollartourists".
I was thinking about something I have read about in the paper, people from all over the world swapping homes for a couple of weeks. The idea is tempting! It would mean a great opportunity to see other places without the high costs of hotel and eating out. But can you trust people you don't know? What if they ruin your house or something??
I have also heard about something called "couchsurfing". Another interesting idea, but maybe more "youth-oriented"?
Anyway, the sun is out and so will I be in a minute! See you later!
